چکیده

The effects of channel width, wall temperature, and flow rate on the dynamics of non-premix flames in a mesoscale combustor were studied in methane and propane–air mixing layers. A flame street structure which consists of multiple triple flamelets in the mixing layer of the reactants was observed experimentally for the first time. Depending on the flow rate, it was found that there are two different flame regimes, an unsteady bimodal flame regime and a flame street regime where there are multiple stable triple flamelets. It was found that the separation distance of the flamelets increased due to the dilution effect of the products and that the size of the flamelets was proportional to the width of the mixing layer. A scale analytical model was developed to qualitatively explain the mechanism of flame streets. The effects of flow velocity, wall temperature, and Lewis number were also investigated and the results showed that the occurrence of flame street regimes was a combined result of heat loss, curvature, diffusion, and dilution effect. 2009 The Combustion Institute. Experimental study of spinning combustion in a mesoscale divergent channel

Quasi-steady and unsteady propagations of methane and propane–air premixed flames in a mesoscale divergent channel were investigated experimentally and theoretically. The emphasis was the impact of variable cross-section area and the flame-wall coupling on the flame transition between different regimes and the onset of flame instability. Experimentally, for the first time, spinning flames were ...

Taylor dispersion and thermal expansion effects on flame propagation in a narrow channel

We investigate the propagation of a premixed flame subject to thermal expansion through a narrow channel against a Poiseuille flow of large amplitude. This is the first study to consider the effect of a large-amplitude flow, characterised by a Péclet number of order one, Pe= O(1), on a variable-density premixed flame in the asymptotic limit of a narrow channel. It is also the first study on Tay...

Turbulence-Augmented Minimization of Combustion Time in Mesoscale Internal Combustion Engines

Mesoscale internal combustion engines for a variety of new combustion system applications have dimensions that are far smaller than conventional macroscale engines, yet unlike true microscale engines allow significant mean flow and turbulence to be created in the combustion chamber by the injection process. The resulting flow allows minimization of the combustion time by augmenting flame propag...

Interaction of Lewis number and heat loss effects for a laminar premixed flame propagating in a channel

A thermo-diffusive model has been used to investigate the interaction of non-unity Lewis number and heat loss for laminar premixed flames propagating in a channel. A coordinate system moving with the flame has been used to immobilize the flame within the computational domain. At Lewis numbers significantly below unity in presence of high heat loss, tip opening near the centerline and dead space...
